How Small Beginnings Ministries Got Its Name

Do not despise these small beginnings,
For the Lord rejoices to see the work begin,
To see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.
Zechariah 4:10

Israel had been decimated.  The Southern kingdom, Judah, was conquered by the Babylonians and forced into exile. The temple was destroyed and Jerusalem was sacked.

After approximately fifty years of exile in Babylon, the tribe of Judah was allowed to return to Jerusalem. Upon their return, the city walls had been torn down, affording the city of Jerusalem no protection from its enemies. Several leaders began the efforts to rebuild, with enemies from within their own people and other nations a constant threat.

Family after family worked together. Fathers, mothers, sons and daughters all worked to build their particular section of wall. Despite intense pressure from their enemies, and the sheer exhaustion of working on such a large project, they finished the wall around Jerusalem… in only fifty-two days.

In many ways, our society and our churches are like Jerusalem’s wall. Many have little or no support or protection in this world. Lives have been decimated and the potential of many haven’t been realized due to a lack of knowledge, vision and support.

Small Beginnings Ministries believes that everyone is important and that everyone has something to contribute to our churches and community. If everyone “pitches in” much could be accomplished. If each of us does our part, no matter how small we think our contribution is, we can build up our churches and communities…together.
